After Cliff Floyd's three-run shot in the first inning, I was giddy as a school girl and praying that Matt Garza would have the type of night where a 3-0 lead would be enough. With Daniel Cabrera on the mound for the Os, I wasn't guaranteeing a win or anything since he's perfect against Tampa Bay, but if you manage to rattle him in the first frame, the runs should pile up, right? And then there's ex-Devil Rays third basemen Aubrey Huff. Man, I was sadder than a dog with no bone when he was traded to the Astros. I loved the guy like a brother. Now, as an orange bird, he first became a manta ray murderer. Now, he's blacking out the sun with his bat. Huff last year batted .365 with seven homers and 14 RBIs against the D-Rays. I continued to like the fellow even though his cruel comments about the growth of the organization swayed me a little bit, but after his performance tonight, the hate inside me is starting to brew! Enough about the traitor already! Actually, one more point to make. Obviously, he hasn't learned his lesson. Huff Daddy made derogatory comments about the city of Baltimore on a syndicated radio show during the offseason. Geez, dude, wait till you're on a different team to do that. Anyway, the jeers turned into cheers when he hit a two-run homer to pull the Orioles to 6-5 in the sixth inning. He also doubled in two runs in the eighth to put Baltimore ahead for the first time, 7-6. I was more surprised by the attendance for this game. Only 10,505 fans. You gotta call them "fans" since they're the only ones who showed up. It's the tiniest crowd since Camden Yards opened in 1992. I wonder if my cousin Steve was there. Nevertheless, are there any bright spots about this calamity? Performances from the top of the lineup (Crawford, Pena, Floyd and Upton) were satisfactory. At least Iwamura had his first hit. He's now batting .111. With the ways things were going in the beginning, I really thought the Rays were going to win, which would have been only their second 2-0 start in the franchise’s 11-year history. I had a smile from ear to ear when the Rays were leading 6-3. How could it have gone wrong so quickly? Al Reyes. Yikes, what was he doing out there? Dan Wheeler pitched the previous inning with two strikeouts. Wheeler pitched ONE inning. Al Reyes, a setup man for the closer, Troy Percival? More like a setup for disaster. The later innings have always been the Achilles' heel of the franchise. Good start, poor end. Bobbles in the outfield by Upton and Nathan Haynes don't help either. When are we going to eliminate these kinds of mistakes? I'm speaking rhetorically, of course. Gosh, if only Jonny Gomes would have been able to hit a three-run pinch-hit homer in the ninth with Iwamura and Upton on base. Well, I'll lick my wounds tonight and expect the Rays to rebound tomorrow.
