Well, it happened again. Another game, another poor hitting performance. Only three hits tonight, one less than yesterday. I can't be too critical of the team after the first six games of the season. I'm definitely happy with a 3-3 record. I'm just disappointed that after winning the first two games of the Yankees series, the Rays had the opportunity to at least split the final two. At the top of the lineup, Akinori Iwamura (.192), Carl Crawford (.148), Carlos Pena (.227) and B.J. Upton (.227) are all batting under .250. Crawford finished the Rays' series against the Yankees 1 for 18. He entered the series a .320 (58 for 181) career hitter at Yankee Stadium. Yikes! Again, the man of the game is Jonny Gomes, replacing Cliff Floyd in the lineup, who was scratched because of a sore right knee. Gomes homered to deep left in the third inning, his second of the season… he's hitting .375. It was Gomes' sixth career home run at Yankee Stadium. I thought Jason Hammel pitched well… he had a rough first inning, but kept the game close until the sixth inning… Bobby Abreu tripled to deep right center and then A-Rod singled to right center, scoring Abreu. Hideki Matsui doubled to deep right, scoring Rodriguez. Hammel was able to get the next three outs, including a strikeout and an intentional walk, to end the inning, 4-1 Yankees. Scott Dohmann had a dreadful seventh inning, giving up two runs on three hits with two strikeouts. Gary Glover had a decent 1-2-3 eighth inning with one strikeout. On the Yankees side, Abreu was on fire with three hits, three runs, one walk and two RBI, which included a two-run homer to deep right in the first inning. Worth noting, Mike Mussina tied Bob Gibson on the career wins list for 42nd place with 251. He also struck out three to equal David Cone for 21st place with 2,668 Ks. Mussina improved to 8-1 with a 1.92 ERA in nine career starts against Tampa Bay at Yankee Stadium. I'm happy that the Rays' home opener is tomorrow because they'll be playing at Tropicana Field for the next eight games against Seattle, Baltimore and Yankees. In order to keep pace with Blue Jays (4-2), Red Sox (3-4), Yankees (4-3) and Orioles (5-1), this eight-game homestand is critical. Matt Garza will get the start against ex-Oriole Erik Bedard. I'll be listening with peanuts and Cracker Jacks.
